I know I haven’t posted for a while. Time goes too fast when you’re busy with a new baby! Our little Marvel is already 2 months old!
She’s growing up way too fast for my liking, but she makes her mama proud! We’ve also moved to a new apartment which took up some times as well as the holidays. Oh yeah, I also got my gallbladder taken out because I had gall stones and pancreatitis, from which I was admitted to the hospital after going to the E.R. Fun times were had indeed (I do feel loads better though!).
Provo city hosts the Freedom Festival every year for the Fourth of July holiday. I knew they had a baby contest and since everyone tells us Marvel is so beautiful I though, what the hay, and signed her up! So the Saturday after I got my gallbladder out, we headed down to the Provo Beach Resort.
They had judging in a vacant store front and they split the children into different age groups, as well as boy, girl, and multiples. We were in the 0-3 month category for girls.
We signed in and went to the judges table where we were met by a man and a woman with different toys. We introduced ourselves and Ms. Marvel. I’d dressed her up patriotic but with a Marvel flair by sewing a Captain America shield patch onto a white onesie. The judges got the reference and loved her name. I had to hide behind Sean so that Marvel would look at them because as I talked she kept looking for her mom. Her Uncle Cody was with us and he helped get her to smile which made the male judge have “goose pimples.” We only had two minutes to interact so when our time was done we went to get in line for photos.
Ms. Marvel is silly because she loves lights of all kind (and while she doesn’t like the sun, she will look at it because it’s so fascinating. It’s hard to tell a baby not to look at the sun!). When they were trying to take her photo she kept staring the other way at the umbrella light! We finally got her to sort of look our way. While the photo isn’t the greatest, it’s kind of shows her wondrous look in her eyes. Or maybe it’s the “what the heck is going on” sort of look.
We then waited for the awards ceremony to start.
When they got to Marvel’s group, they started with 3rd place. We didn’t hear Marvel’s name for 3rd, nothing for 2nd, but then when they announced 1st place we hard our baby girl’s name! I was surprised in that there were a LOT of beautiful babies there! I was so proud of my baby girl and I admit it fed my ego a little as she’s a part of me.
Sean wore matching Captain America shirt and hat!
We got a medal and a bib saying she was a winner as well as a few other little gift certificate and prizes. They took photos of the winners and then let everyone enjoy the festivities. We saw the male judge after the awards ceremony, and he told us it was an easy win!
They had a fun little petting zoo with foxes, snakes, a lizard, and a bird of some kind. Marvel was too little to enjoy it but we had fun! We also used our gift certificate that we won to get Marvel’s hand and foot print in clay.
The week after the contest, we got to participate in the Children’s Parade for the Freedom Festival.
It was a quick parade, only a few blocks, but a lot of fun! I passed out candy to the few people who were there to watch. We then had a winner’s reception at the Provo City Courthouse.
It was a great experience and while I won’t be becoming a pageant mom, we do plan on entering her into the contest next year as well!
